Canal boats in England can be hired anytime between mid March and until mid October. British Waterways are very good at organising repairs along the canals at times outside the normal canal boating season.

For clothing early or late in the season, one should dress accordingly, and not forget good walking shoes and rubber boots and an umbrella for those strolls along the picturesque towpaths, walking a little slower than the speed of your canal boat.

Canal boats nowadays have installed central heating and/or solid fuel stoves which extends a canal break season. Many festive minded escape to a canal boat for Yuletide, Christmas or the New Year festivities.

If you are new to canals in England and wonder how long a cruise you should take, it is important to know that the canal boats travel at about 3mph and that each lock takes about 10 minutes ( and 15 minutes if you are operating alone). Calculate therefore 7hrs travelling on a journey of 16 miles with 10 locks. It is important to realise that in the height of the season, most canal break holidaymakers will stop up for lunch or for the evening at about the same time. This could put your planned stop at a premium, but there are plenty of pubs along the way and the English countryside at its best to motor gently through.

One may moor up anywhere beside the towpath for up to a fortnight unless clearly stated to the contrary, but the minimum will be 24hrs. However, no mooring is allowed on bends, in the ponds between locks or by a winding point (turn around point ).

One may buy maps and books that cover the canal systems with interesting historical notes, vicinity of pubs, shops, launderettes, banks, post offices and chemists.
